Making Baby Hay While the Sun Shines

September 1, 2010

I have a seriously cute baby. I’m sure at least three people will corroborate my testimony. My husband and I have some seriously awesome baby-making abilities. I mean, if there was an Olympic event for making babies I’m sure we would place in the top ten (come on, there has to be a bunch of other good baby makers out in the world right? And there’s been Olympic events that were weirder.)

But no matter how great I am at making babies, should I quit everything I’m doing and concentrate on making babies for the rest of my life?

I. Don’t. Think. So.
Seriously, my stretch marks are getting morning sickness just thinking about that.

So what the hell does this have to do with anything? My point is that just because you’re good at something doesn’t mean you should devote your entire life to it. I’m talking work here people!

If you’re the best darn rodent catcher there is this side of the Mississippi (what side of the Mississippi is Edmonton on I wonder?) do you really want to be doing that all the time? Shouldn’t a rodent catcher have outlets that don’t have twitchy little whiskers and beady little eyes?

The work/life balance thing is something that I’m sure you’ve heard lots of people prattle on about. I’m not here to prattle on though, I’m more of a yammerer myself. But it’s pretty important. And none more so than when you have precious little time to devote to either.

As a result of my cute little baby there is very little time to work and even less time to play. So making sure there’s a balance is crucial to keeping my sanity (sanity good, gibbering mommy bad).
But I think I’ve come up with a pretty good system. The daylight hours are for work (and by daylight hours I mean the portion of the day when baby is either sleeping or happily engaged with something no one but him thinks is a toy) and the night time hours are for play (and by night time hours I mean the precious hour and a half between baby going to bed and when I start to get giggly because of sleep deprivation).

My awesome husband who has top notch sperm has a funny saying – “Make hay while the sun shines”*
And that’s exactly what I do – while the sun shines, I make…… hay! Or you know, develop web sites and stuff.

*May not be something my husband actually says, but I know he would with a bit of coaching.
